We’ve been on “information overload” since the 1600s. But it’s only lately that we’ve become expected to process—to consume, make sense of and respond effectively to—more information than we can possibly handle well.
As a result, we do several things: We focus on a slice of the input, doing a good job with that but letting other important things slide. We attempt to multitask our way through a deluge of emails, Facebook posts, tweets and other inputs—scanning furiously and only half-remembering what we just consumed.
Sometimes we’re nearly paralyzed by the mountain of information we’re expected to deal with. And all along the way, we feel like we should be doing all this better—if only we could figure out how.
My friend David Murray, a longtime observer of the business communications scene, captures well why this is so important to people who help their organizations communicate.
How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. But what do you do when a new elephant arrives at your doorstep every morning? That’s what we’ll be talking about in this blog. I’ll share a few of my own insights and observations, and I’ll point you to the best of what I encounter elsewhere. Please don’t hesitate to weigh in on any of the topics you see.
